About Kenan-Flagler MBA

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill houses the Kenan-Flagler Business School. The MBA cohort typically represents a wide array of industries and professional backgrounds, providing a truly global learning experience.

The industry experience of students, prior to joining is also diverse, ranging from consulting, banking, and financial services to fashion and performing arts. 

The average work experience for the full-time MBA is 5 years which ensures that students contribute richly to classroom learning by bringing forward their varied industry experience Peer-peer learning beyond the classroom is also facilitated through this.

At 38%, Kenan Flagler has a decent gender diversity ratio compared to other B-schools throughout the world which is commendable.

Kenan Flagler MBA Curriculum

In the Full-Time MBA Program, students will gain practical skills and information that will serve as a springboard for one’s professional career. The adaptable, forward-thinking curriculum will push students to think differently, confront challenges front on, and find creative answers.

Students will not, however, be able to accomplish it alone. Teamwork, an important skill in real-world situations, is also an important component of the program. Students will be allocated to a study team during orientation, with whom stydents will collaborate closely throughout the core courses. Students will discover the ideas of team effectiveness as a group, work together to solve issues and situations, and practice providing and receiving feedback.

Students will earn 62 credit hours by taking core courses, electives, independent study projects, and specialty courses.

The core curriculum

Students will lay the groundwork for one’s study and acquire excellent literacy with important business ideas in 15 mandatory core courses. Students will work in finance, accounting, economics, data analytics, business strategy, operations, and marketing, as well as crucial soft skills like leadership, communication, and ethics.

 Independent study projects

Independent study projects, in addition to elective courses, allow students to build specific knowledge that broadens one’s commercial and professional perspective. During the academic year, students can pursue independent study by working as a teaching assistant, performing faculty-directed research, or completing an unpaid internship.

Some recent examples of independent study projects include:

  • Industry and market analysis for an alternative energy company seeking a new digital marketing platform.
  • Market analysis of various geographies for a real estate development firm.
  • Assessment of various investment options for a private equity firm.
  • Development of mobile payment options for a software company seeking entry into foreign markets.

Applied work experience

Applying the skills and information students get from practical job experience will equip them to make an instant impact when they start their career. Students must complete the Applied Work Experience degree requirement with an established firm or organization before commencing the second year of education. Prior to beginning the MBA, and during the program, the Career & Leadership advisors will assist students in identifying, evaluating, and locating opportunities to fulfill this criterion. Company internships, entrepreneurial efforts, consultancy engagements, faculty-directed research projects, and other externally focused experience opportunities are examples of these options.

Concentrations

Kenan Flagler has twelve concentrations and one emphasis area to help students tailor one’s academic strategy even further. Whether it’s the popular Consulting concentration, the innovative Real Estate concentration (one of the largest in the country), the dynamic Healthcare concentration (which collaborates with UNC’s top-tier School of Medicine), the Business Analytics & Management Science concentration, one of several other concentrations, or a fully customized approach, focusing on a specific area can help students deepen one’s expertise and become more marketable for specific roles and industries.

Whether students want to change jobs or advance in their current one, Kenan Flagler can help students set their short- and long-term goals and determine the next actions students will need to take to get there. Students begin by reflecting on their talents, interests, and passions to determine where students would best fit in a professional capacity. They then refine their goals and focus their efforts by researching certain sectors, positions, and employers. Finally, students become ready to meet with corporate recruiters by polishing their CV, sharpening their interview skills, and learning about the sector.

the Career & Leadership coaches are professionals in their fields. They are familiar with the business and the recruiters that interview pupils. Collaboration is essential to the UNC Kenan-Flagler experience, as demonstrated through the career mentors. Over 65 second-year MBA students act as mentors to first-year students each year, sharing their experiences and providing guidance and mentoring throughout the employment search process.

The Business Communication Center provides free consultations and workshops to help students improve their written and oral communication skills, such as creating an effective resume and cover letter, polishing verbal and written presentations, practicing interview skills, and planning and drafting papers or reports.
